Chiefs 38 : Ravens 24 - S Mike Brown and LB Demorrio Williams led the Chiefs in tackles, Brown with 12 and Williams with 10
  • Grand Island Independent Week 1 Summery: A total of 18 former Huskers saw action during the opening week of the 2009 NFL season. Mike Brown and Demorrio Williams were the top two tacklers for the Kansas City Chiefs, while Correll Buckhalter was Denver’s leading rusher.
Four former Huskers met in Baltimore as the Ravens downed the Chiefs, 38-24. After nine seasons in Chicago, Brown made his Kansas City debut with 12 total tackles, including eight solo stops. Williams followed his fellow Blackshirt on the tackler chart with 10 total stops (seven solo). Ravens Fabian Washington and Sam Koch got the win though, as Washington had two tackles and a pass deflection, while Koch booted two punts for 87 yards.
Under new Head Coach Josh McDaniels, Buckhalter received the start in his Broncos debut. The former Husker carried the ball eight times for 46 yards, an average of 5.8 yards per carry. While splitting time with rookie Knowshon Moreno, Buckhalter also caught two balls for 11 yards in Denver’s dramatic 12-7 win over Cincinnati.
While former Husker Carl Nicks was protecting Drew Brees as he threw for six touchdowns, Scott Shanle put together a solid game for the Saints’ defense. A native of St. Edward, Neb., Shanle racked up five total tackles and intercepted Matthew Stafford late in the third quarter, returning the pick 13 yards.
