  • 12/19/04 - Chargers 21, Browns 0: Maybe LG Toniu Fonoti will be this year's Tomlinson ---- as in, how can this guy not make the Pro Bowl? The former El Camino High standout stood up Browns defenders on numerous occasions. (North County Times)
  • 12/19/04 - Texans 24, Bears 5: The temperature at kickoff was 9 and the wind chill 10 below zero which does not make for friendly kicking weather. In the first quarter Texans K Kris Brown missed a 42-yard attempt wide-right. However, later in the fourth quarter Brown was successful on a 20-yard attempt that put the Texans up 10-5 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Texans G Zach Wiegert left in the second quarter with a sprained knee ligament. (AP)
  • 12/19/04 - Bills 33, Bengals 17: The Bengals’ eighth loss guaranteed the franchise’s 14th consecutive non-winning season and knocked them out of playoff contention.
Buffalo blocked a Kyle Larson punt and recovered it in the end zone. The touchdown was the first allowed by Bengals special teams in 30 games under Bengals special teams coach Darrin Simmons. Otherwise Larson had a decent day punting with 5 kicks for a 40.8 yard average.
For the Bills, DE Chris Kelsay made his first NFL interception after tipping a Jon Kitna pass and grabbing the ball out of the air at the 29 yard line. Kelsay also had 6 tackles (5 solo) in the game. (Cincinnati Enquirer, RNews.com)
  • 12/19/04 - Vikings 28, Lions 27: Minnesota survived a botched Detroit extra-point attempt with eight seconds left to hold onto a wild 28-27 victory at Ford Field.
Instead of blaming the special teams goof, Detroit fullback Cory Schlesinger blamed the offense: "It should have never really come to (the missed extra point)," he said. "I think we should have scored in the red zone (earlier) instead of having Hanson out there. I really don't blame anybody because we should have scored more points than relying on something like that." (AP)
  • 12/19/04 - Chiefs 45, Broncos 17: Chiefs' G Will Shields started his 189th consecutive game and played in his 190th consecutive game, extending his team record in both areas.
  • 12/19/04 - Jaguars 28, Packers 25: Green Bay continually shot themselves in the foot at home against the Jaguars. Brett Favre turned the ball over four times and fell to 31-4 at home after Dec. 1, losing for just the second time in 40 cold-weather games at home. Nevertheless, the Packers (8-6) became the ninth team in NFL history to reach the playoffs after a 1-4 start.
Running back Ahman Green went over the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth straight season with a 12-yard jaunt on his second carry of the game. Green came into Sunday's game with 992 yards on 219 carries and six touchdowns.
The five straight seasons of 1,000 yards ties Jim Taylor for the Packer record. Taylor reached that mark each season from 1960 through 1964.
Green gained 51 yards on 12 carries in the first half. His 12 carries gave him 1,500 for his career. The seven-year veteran finished the game with 94 yards on 17 carries against the NFL's sixth-ranked run defense. He also caught two passes for 11 yards.
But he also fumbled in the first quarter at the Jacksonville 11, and in the second quarter, Green and quarterback Brett Favre screwed up a hand-off at the Jaguars 23 that resulted in another fumble. (Journal Times)
  • 12/19/04 - Falcons 34, Panthers 31: After the Falcons tied the game at 31-31 in the fourth quarter, Carolina still had 1:37 left on the clock and two timeouts with which to work.
On first down from his 20, Jake Delhomme completed a 13-yard pass to Ricky Proehl, who stepped out of bounds to stop the clock. But on the subsequent first down, Carolina hoped to fool the Falcons and ran a toss sweep to running back Nick Goings. Atlanta linebacker Demorrio Williams read the play and tackled Goings for a six-yard loss.
The din from the raucous Georgia Dome crowd then caused a procedure penalty on Carolina. Faced with second-and-21, Panthers' coach John Fox chose to play for overtime and ran Goings up the middle twice as time ran out. (The Macon Telegraph)
