  • 01/09/05 - Vikings 31, Packers 17: The Packers offensive struggles were punctuated by 4 Brett Favre interceptions. Green Bay was down 17-0 before finally getting on the scoreboard but they narrowly avoided turnovers on two different plays on the way there. On the second play of the drive, an attempted Favre handoff to Ahman Green was fumbled, but Green fell on the ball to keep the drive alive.
Playing catchup for most of the game, the Packers running game was never able to get going. Green finished with 80 yards on 20 carries along with 2 receptions for 16 yards.
Green Bay’s opening drive of the second half started with a tipped pass by Brian Williams that Ralph Brown intercepted and returned for 27 yards. However, the Vikings offense was unable to convert the turnover into any points. (VikingUpdate.com)
"Brett just didn't look comfortable," Brown said. "We really studied the first two games. Those games were so easy for Brett, maybe they thought they didn't have to change anything. We took away his big routes, and he didn't know what to do." (Star Tribune)
  • 01/08/05 - Rams 27, Seahawks 20: Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, the Seahawks were driving in Rams territory when cornerback DeJuan Groce picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass. Or so it seemed.
The pass was intended for Maurice Morris, but bounced off him and into the hands of Groce. But linebacker Tommy Polley, covering Morris, went down and grabbed Morris' facemask as he fell, snapping the running back's head back.
The facemask grab had nothing to do with Morris not catching the ball, but officials ruled that the infraction occurred while the ball was still in flight, negating the interception. Instead of a turnover, the Seahawks got 15 yards and an automatic first down on the St. Louis 19.
On the next play, Bobby Engram beat Groce for a touchdown reception. (Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
Later, Groce broke up a third-down pass in the third quarter, forcing the Seahawks to settle for a second Josh Brown field goal. (Post-Dispatch)
  • After Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren passed up on an opportunity to attempt a 60-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the first half, kicker Josh Brown was visibly upset.
He stomped around the sideline while the Seahawks unsuccessfully attempted one final play. He ran into the locker room in a huff.
"I at least wanted the attempt," Brown said after the game. "It would have been a fun thing to try. But there's more risk than advantage there. With nine seconds left, there was plenty of time for them to get the ball, go 10 or 15 yards and kick the field goal. The child in me wanted the big kick, but you've got to understand the situation."
Perhaps playing a game of what-if, Brown came out of the locker room a few minutes before the second half and tried a 60-yarder. It fell a few yards short.
"Just for grins," he said of the attempt. "I don't know if I really put all my back into it, but I gave it a shot." (Everitt Herald)
  • Grant Wistrom, listed as doubtful for the game, did not get a chance to play against his former team in what proved to be the Seahawks final game of the season.
