*Ahman Green named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
*Grant Wistrom named NFC Defensive Player of the Month (December).
  • 12/29/03 - Carolina vs New York Giants: Defensive end Mike Rucker, who missed the past two games with a sore knee, played in the first half on Sunday with no complications.
"It felt good," Rucker said. "We didn’t go backwards, and that’s the best thing." (The State, South Carolina)
  • 12/28/03 - Green Bay vs Denver: Ahman Green set a club record with 218 rushing yards, including a 98-yard touchdown, to lead the Packers to a 31-3 rout of the shorthanded Denver Broncos.
But the Packers (10-6) needed the Arizona Cardinals to upset the Minnesota Vikings in order to qualify for the postseason as the NFC North Division champion. It didn't appear it was likely to happen when the Vikings held a 17-6 lead with under two minutes left.
However, Arizona staged a dramatic rally as Nathan Poole made a leaping 28-yard touchdown catch on the final play of the game for an 18-17 victory over Minnesota, sending the sellout crowd of Lambeau Field listening on radios (as well as the Packers' sideline) into a frenzy.
Green scored on a two-yard run with 1:35 left in the third to increase Green Bay's lead to 17-3. Denver rookie Adrian Madise returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards to the Green Bay 12. But after a goal-line stand by the Packers, Green raced 98 yards for a score, the longest ever run by a Packer and the longest run ever against by the Broncos.
"Every time we need something, he (Green) seems to be the guy to do it," said Packers center Mike Flanagan. "He's had an amazing year, he's an amazing player and we're going to ride him as long as we can." (USA Today)
  • 12/28/03 - Houston vs Indianapolis: Jay Foreman led the Texans defense in tackles with 15 total, 11 solo and knocked down a pass.
  • 12/28/03 - Right guard Zach Wiegert made a brief appearance Sunday after missing the entire week of practice with a hyperextended elbow. (Houston Chronicle)
  • 12/28/03 - San Francisco vs Seattle: Punter Bill LaFleur, booed often by fans during the game, had a net average of 34.1 yards on eight punts for the 49ers. (Contra Costa Times) Candlestick crowd booed the 49ers' poor running game, the short throws, the conservative game planning and, most of all, the punting of beleaguered Bill LaFleur. (SF Gate)
  • 12/28/03 - St. Louis vs Detroit: Grant Wistrom stewed on a chair in front of his locker, with an ice pack on his elbow and a disgusted look on his face.
"We came out flat," Wistrom said. "It was evident when we warmed up and on the first snap. Football is an emotional game, and they obviously wanted it more than we did."
With the top seed in the NFC to play for, the St. Louis Rams could not beat a team with only pride on the line.
Detroit won a 30-20 shocker over the Rams on Sunday. (AP)
Wistrom was able to get another sack for an 8 yard loss, he's been doing quite well in that department as of late; however, it was the only sack for the Rams and was a gift where Joey Harrington tripped over his guard and Wistrom got credit for a sack. Wistrom ended the game with 6 solo tackles. (GridironGateway.com) 1
  • 12/27/03 - New England vs Buffalo: Russ Hochstein replaced G Damien Woody who sustained a second-quarter leg injury and did not return, but Woody seemed fine after the game. (The Hartford Courant)
  • 12/28/03 - Bills reserve DE Chris Kelsay had his most active game, he had 4 tackles against the Patriots.
  • Tyrone Williams did not play (benched).
