MVP poll:
53% Eric Warfield
33% Correll Buckhalter
7% Mike Minter
7% Dejuan Groce

  • Eric Warfield nominated for Week 08 AFC Defensive Player of the Week.
  • 10/26/03 - Philadelphia vs NY Jets: Against the Giants, it was Brian Westbrook coming to the rescue with an improbable punt return for a touchdown. On Sunday against the Jets, it was Correll Buckhalter's turn. Buckhalter rushed for an even 100 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns as the Eagles climbed above the .500 mark for the first time all season with a gritty 24-17 victory over the Jets. (SportsNet)
  • 10/26/03 - St. Louis vs Pittsburgh: Rookie cornerback DeJuan Groce had one tackle and an interception in his first NFL start (in place of the injured Travis Fisher).
Said Rams S Rich Coady: "We're getting impressive performances from the rookies and young players. They've stepped up and played great. DeJuan stepped in today and played great." (St. Louis Post)
  • 10/26/03 - St. Louis vs Pittsburgh: Defensive end Grant Wistrom registered his first sack of the season, and his first sack in 11 games, dropping Pittsburgh quarterback Tommy Maddox in the first quarter Sunday.
"It's about time," Wistrom said. "It's been a struggle all year long. I've been close a lot, but that doesn't go down in the stats."
Wistrom also forced Steelers running back Jerome Bettis to spit up the ball and linebacker Robert Thomas dove back into the fray to recover. (St. Louis Post)
  • 10/26/03 - San Francisco vs Arizona: The facts: The 49ers failed to score an on an extra-point attempt following an early 1st-quarter touchdown in what ended up as a devastating 16-13 OT loss to the Cardinals. The AP version: "San Francisco (3-5), coming off an impressive 24-7 victory over Tampa Bay, botched a point-after attempt with a bad snap, leaving holder Bill LaFleur with the ball. He passed to Weaver, who was tackled well short of the goal line."
...and the San Fran (where love for Lafleur is hard to come by) version: "LaFleur dropped the snap to prevent even attempting a kick on the 49ers' first extra point, and later he had a punt blocked, the Cardinals' first in more than six years." (Ira Miller, SFGate.com)
  • 10/26/03 - Carolina vs New Orleans: Two huge defensive plays in overtime propelled the Panthers to a 23-20 overtime victory Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome. The first play came when Minter seemingly came out of nowhere to stop Deuce McAllister just before the first-down marker. A first-down would have given New Orleans the ball at Carolina's 36 and put the Saints on the verge of a potential winning field goal.
"All I saw was (McAllister) get the ball and there wasn't anybody over there," Minter said. "I just took off. I said, `If they get this, it's going to be over.' So I just sold out and went to get him and made the play."
That set up another huge play on fourth-and-1. Defensive end Julius Peppers, who has been quiet most of the season, penetrated and hit McAllister behind the line of scrimmage and knocked the ball loose. (Charlotte Observer)
  • Mike Rucker added 2 more sacks to his season total, he now has 8 which puts him near the NFL lead.
  • 10/26/03 - Detroit vs Chicago: With no timeouts left and just a minute on the game clock, Detroit lined up for an onside kick. Jason Hanson popped the ball up in the air and Bill Schroeder appeared to recover the ball legally at the Lions’ 40. However, upon further review the call was reversed because FB Cory Schlesinger touched the ball just before it went ten yards giving the ball back to Chicago.
"It looked like he got it to me, but I didn’t see the review. I was on the field, but obviously I didn’t have a birds eye view like the cameras did," Brian Urlacher said of the reversal. "It felt real nice because we don’t get a lot of calls because we don’t earn them. We got a break today, finally."
  • 10/26/03 - Kansas City vs Buffalo: Corners Eric Warfield and Dexter McCleon were never out of position against receivers Eric Moulds and Josh Reed. Warfield and McCleon both got their hands on interceptions. Warfield snagged two and caused a fumble. (Jason Whitlock, KC Star)
  • Eric Warfield's interception of Drew Bledsoe's end-of-half Hail Mary heave provided the second of seven takeaways - five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. (Warfield had a hand in three)
Warfield finished with two picks, his final one in the fourth period setting up a 49-yard Morten Andersen field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced through. It was that kind of night for the Chiefs.
Warfield also forced a third turnover with his sack-and-strip of Bledsoe at the KC 15. One play later, Chiefs RB Holmes scored his third touchdown on a field-reversing run behind Trent Green's block. (MorningSun.net)
  • Keyuo Craver did not play (NFL suspension).
  • Scott Shanle did not play (NFL suspension/Injured).
