Details:
  • 10/21/03 - Oakland vs Kansas City: When Oakland finally mounted a significant drive in the final seconds of the first quarter during Monday night's game, Eric Warfield intercepted a pass intended for Tim Brown inside the Kansas City 20. (AP)
  • 10/20/03 - San Francisco vs Tampa Bay: San Francisco 49ers P Bill LaFleur sustained a left ankle strain against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. LaFleur is expected to be fine and will be ready to go next week against the Arizona Cardinals. (KFFL)
  • 10/20/03 - Atlanta vs New Orleans: Falcons CB Tyrone Williams pulled up on a New Orleans' scoring play and was benched for the remainder of the game. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  • As others have run out of ways to describe what's happened to the Falcons in the wake of Sunday's 45-17 loss to the Saints, perhaps troubled cornerback Tyrone Williams best summarized events on Monday when he said, "Pfft."
With Atlanta's sixth straight loss, that's where the season's gone. Williams, though, wasn't trying to encapsulate. He was trying to escape a reporter. (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  • 10/20/03 - Seattle vs Chicago: No one was more circumspect after the win than rookie kicker Josh Brown, who missed a 50-yard field goal into the wind on the Seahawks' first drive of the game, and then later booted the ball out of bounds on the kickoff after Seattle scored its first touchdown.
"It started out a little rough," Brown said of the missed field goal. "We were really pushed for time on that 50-yarder, but that's part of the game. ... Then I played it too far over and the wind carried it out (wide right). And I had a rough day on the kickoffs."
It was enough to cause Holmgren to feel proud of himself for keeping his composure.
"I was very calm, and then I talked to him later," Holmgren said. "I told him all those scientific things you talk to a kicker about. Bless his heart, but he is a good kicker."
The missed field goal was only the second Brown has missed this season, and the kickoff was designed to go to the left side of the field to force Chicago to break down its wedge of blockers. Neither one worked well, partly because of the swirling winds in Seahawks Stadium.
"The wind didn't help him, so you learn from those things, and you can't do it again," Holmgren said. "Then he tried to overcompensate on the next kick and left it short. They get out of whack sometimes." (Seattle Post-Iintelligencer)
  • Chicago safety Mike Brown's interception in the back of the end zone with 10 seconds left in the first half was the low point for the Seahawks in their win against the Bears. (Seattle Times)
  • Rookie kicker Josh Brown had a rough day, missing a 50-yard field goal and sending a kickoff out of bounds. (Everett Herald)
  • 10/20/03 - NY Giants vs Philadelphia: The Eagles did try to test the Giants' new starting cornerback Ralph Brown, but other than a questionable 41-yard pass-interference penalty in the first quarter, Brown held up well. (Greenwich Times)
  • The Eagles beat the New York Giants 14-10 Sunday despite another inept performance from their offense, proving it's possible to be thoroughly dominated and still win. Running backs Duce Staley, Correll Buckhalter and Westbrook have been the only positive on offense. The trio combined for 91 yards rushing against the Giants, or 67.9 percent of the team's offense. (AP)
  • 10/20/03 - Green Bay vs St. Louis: Among the Packers’ miscues in their loss to the Rams was a poor punt by Josh Bidwell on his first kick of the game. A low, line-drive punt of only 33 yards allowed returner DeJuan Groce to catch the ball on the run and return it 11 yards to the Packers’ 47. Three plays later, the Rams took a 14-3 lead. (PackersNews.com)
  • With the Rams leading 14-10, the Packers had methodically moved from their own 13-yard line to the Rams’ 31 when, on a second-and-three play, Ahman Green was tripped up by Grant Wistrom and lost his balance. As Green tried to steady himself, outside linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa jarred the ball out and then defensive tackle Brian Young drilled Green. Cornerback Jerametrius Butler recovered the fumble, and the Rams scored on the ensuing possession to take a 21-10 lead.
"Just a guy in the right spot at the right time," Green said of the fumble. "He popped it out. I was trying to regain my balance, but the guy came around and poked the ball out. You just go to the next play like I did."
It was Green’s fifth fumble of the season — he has lost four — and second in as many weeks that led directly to a touchdown. His overtime fumble in last week’s loss to Kansas City spoiled his third straight 100-yard game. Against the Rams, he managed only 35 yards on 20 carries.
The Packers firmly believe Green is one of the NFL’s elite running backs, but concern over his fumbling problems is growing.
Green’s backup on Sunday fumbled, too. With Tony Fisher out with a groin injury, Davenport was thrust back into the backup role and lost the ball when he was stood up behind the line of scrimmage during a first-quarter run. (PackersNews.com) The only other RB on the Packers roster is Dahrran Diedrick (practice squad).
  • Packers RB Ahman Green suffered an ankle sprain Sunday against the Rams, but was fine by Monday. (KFFL)
  • 10/20/03 - Carolina vs Tennessee: The Titans gave up three sacks during their 37-17 victory, including one to each of Carolina's starting defensive ends, Mike Rucker and Julius Peppers. (The Tennessean)
  • Keyuo Craver did not play (NFL suspension).
  • Scott Shanle did not play (NFL suspension/Injured).
